GALACTIC COMMANDER was my first VR project I attempted. The idea was to explore what a RTS game would look like when all three-dimensions were accessible (something like Ender’s Game). Built in Unity with the Steam VR Plugin this project was developed in just under a week (including research time).
In GALACTIC COMMANDER the player sits at the helm of their capital ship, encased in a hologram of the surrounding space detailing all allies, enemies, and neutral environments such as asteroids. This helm wasn’t just for show too, the player could look out their windows and the ships moving in real-time and divert energies to the different systems via levers nearby.
I learnt a lot about VR such as pooling everything in the beginning as even a millisecond delay is very nauseating. There was also a lot of fiddling around with shaders and learning how to render in multiple cameras simultaneously in Unity to achieve the holographic and live-space displays.
